Se han detectado alrededor de 200 tipos diferentes de este virus, algunos de los cuales pueden progresar a lesiones de alto riesgo que pueden derivar en c\u00e1ncer (de cuello uterino, vulva, vagina, pene, escroto, ano y orofar\u00edngeo).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>En la mayor\u00eda de los casos las personas afectadas con este virus no presentan s\u00edntomas o signos de la infecci\u00f3n, por lo que se recomienda efectuar un chequeo m\u00e9dico regular. En el caso de las mujeres se realiza una prueba de Papanicolaou (conocida com\u00fanmente como citolog\u00eda vaginal), en la cual se pueden detectar cambios anormales en las c\u00e9lulas del cuello uterino y en el hombre el examen prost\u00e1tico.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Un factor o elemento distintivo de esta enfermedad radica en la aparici\u00f3n de verrugas genitales en la vagina y el pene en dos tipos del virus (6 y 11), caracterizadas por peque\u00f1as protuberancias carnosas, blandas e indoloras, con forma similar a una coliflor en miniatura. De igual forma se requiere la inmediata atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>El primer paso para prevenir este virus consiste en la educaci\u00f3n sexual, de forma especial en la poblaci\u00f3n joven. Es recomendable el uso de preservativos para prevenir la infecci\u00f3n por el VPH.
